Consideration framework for sensors Desk

13 October 2022 @ 09:00 - 18:30

The public space is increasingly digitized, for instance by using sensors (e.g., measuring devices, cameras). The City of Amsterdam is designing an assessment framework for placing sensors. During Society 5.0 Festival, the City of Amsterdam would love to hear also your thoughts, especially about urban aspects that you care about and you might be concerned that the sensors would impact.

We invite you to do so by experiencing a speculative design installation, Future Frictions. This is a prototype interactive scenario-based digital tool developed by researchers from University of Enschede and Utrecht University, and their collaborators, Creative Coding Utrecht (more information at www.responsiblecities.nl).

In Future Frictions, you walk around a neighbourhood and interact with different people living in it. When encountering a sensing technology (e.g., drone), your task is to make controversial decisions regarding its application, and you will immediately experience consequences in the urban environment and on residents’ daily lives. Based on your choices, the city will change as well as the interactions with and between the people living there. By using speculative and experiential methods, Future Frictions aims to provoke reflection on how sensing technology might impact urban life and those aspects that we care about.
