Data Commons

13 October 2022 @ 11:30 - 12:45

Datacommons are data platforms in which the community collectively defines the rules for access and use and where a balance is achieved between sharing and protecting data. Datacommons are a central part of the community economy: an economic model in which cooperation and profit sharing are central.

Waag explores the (technical) design and developmental requirements and challenges of commons in the digital domain.

But the digital domain is opaque. To make it transparent and unravel the technological ecosystem, designs and values that are hidden behind the many apps and interfaces we connect to, Waag developed the model of a public stack (publicstack.net). In this session we briefly explain the model and illustrate it with examples of projects where we apply this and develop infrastructure and ecosystems that foster open, fair and inclusive techno-economical systems.

In the second part we facilitate a workshop, where the audience will map initiatives according to the public stack model and start a dialogue about the ethics and values that drive the dynamics of civil, private and state stacks.
