The future of (public) space: what are we designing, and for whom?

12 October 2022 @ 16:45 - 18:00

With the rise of remote working, we see that big office spaces are no longer needed. There seems to be renewed attention for communal spaces, with co-living and co-working becoming popular, but with gentrification on the rise one could question whether this is a voluntary development or simply a means to stay afoot in the city. At the same time, we see that the newest generation is attracted to a digital space to meet, connect and interact. With all these developments happening, what role should the built environment and public space fulfill for society 5.0?

In this panel talk, we will explore the development of cities and (digital) spaces to understand society 5.0’s future needs for their environment. We will question whether some of these developments really add value to society, and how we should design cities and spaces to ensure they are inclusive and environmentally futureproof.
